Computing on the go: notebook computers offer battery-powered mobility and constantly improving performance - but, compared to desktop computers, at a much higher price; are they for you?

Article Abstract:

Key factors in buying a notebook or portable computer include the processor, hard disk capacity and amount of RAM. The top three notebook computers are the Gateway 2000 Solo 2300 SE, $4,199; the Compaq Presario 1207, $3,499; and the IBM ThinkPad 560E, $3,999 plus $600 for optional 10x CD-ROM drive. The Gateway, with a L2 cache memory, has the longest-lasting battery of the three. The Compaq, with a 33.6 kb persecond fax/modem, is the only model with a CD-ROM drive and floppy disk drive included. The IBM's MNX processor is fast but no other drive can be connected internally.

Lapping it up

Article Abstract:

An evaluation of 10 laptop computers revealed that the best buys are the Dell Inspiron 3200 and the Gateway Solo 2500 S6-233LS. All the models tested performed reasonably well but these two models offered particularly good value. Improvements to both the Gateway and the Dell have given them a larger screen and a faster processor than when tested. Both models are easy to use and come with a good range of free software. The battery life of the Gateway is outstanding, but the Dell has a hibernation mode.

Mobile computing

Article Abstract:

Latest notebook PCs offer considerable value for money, with features such as 8Mb of memory at least 800Mb of RAM and a Pentium 100 or 120 processor. When purchasing a notebook, it is important to consider factors such as battery life, power-management features and whether there is an automatic save function if the batteries run flat. Of models tested recently, the best are the Toshiba Satellite 110CT/810 and the Toshiba Satellite 110CS/810.
