Concentrated markets: a single manufacturer commanding a massive market share with a range of different supermarket brands: it happens a lot in Australia, but do you know who owns what products, and where real choice is limited?

Article Abstract:

Some companies hold an unfair dominance in the market in certain types of products, marketing several brands of the same product to hide this dominance. This lack of competition can create high prices and lower quality, and should be cause for concern among consumers. Examples of these products include diapers, food and toiletries. The Australiian Competition and Consumer Commission keeps watch over potential unfair pricing practices.

A different approach to cleaning: home-made cleaners using everyday household chemicals work well enough to satisfy many people, but often require a bit more effort

Article Abstract:

Homemade cleaning products are popular among consumers because they are less expensive, environmentally safer, and generally free of health risks. The basic ingredients for these products include ammonia, essential oils, lemon juice, methylated spirits, pure soap flakes, sodium bicarbonate, vinegar, and washing soda. These ingredients may not have the strength of commercially produced products but they render satisfactory results.

Shopping for household paper products

Article Abstract:

There are many paper products that claim to be environmentally friendly on the labels, but some may not be. Most facial tissue, toilet paper, paper towels, and napkins are biodegradable. But not all are made from recycled paper, and most are bleached, which involves the use of toxic chemicals.
