Crossing the Channel

Article Abstract:

Strong competition among operators of cross-Channel ferry services means that there is very little difference in price between the services available. Services vary mainly in quality only, but it is possible to obtain reduced fares by travelling at less popular times or by taking advantage of offers for families or groups. Ferry operators are now facing competition from the Hoverspeed Seacat service on two short cross-Channel routes, and hovercraft and jetfoil crossings are also available. The best deals for the three main blocks of routes are considered.

Fire in the Channel Tunnel

Article Abstract:

Serious doubts are being raised as to the safety of passengers using Channel Tunnel trains, especially as they will be required to remain in their car or coach during the journey. Efforts to raise these questions have so far been unsuccessful, despite a survey indicating that more people are concerned about using the Channel Tunnel than about travelling by air or ferry. The main safety problem concerns fire, possibly caused by terrorist attack, and the need to make profit by transporting passengers quickly should not come before adequate safety checks.

Channel hopping for bargain shopping

Article Abstract:

Cross-channel shoppers seeking bargains in France are advised to focus on bulk-buy packs of beer and spirits in French supermarkets. Other good buy products include olive oil, confectionery, coffee, herbal teas, seafood, and speciality prepared foods. Shoppers are advised to take 10 or 20 French Franc (FFr) coins for trolleys. An overview of what the ports of Boulogne, Calais, Dieppe, and Ostend have to offer is included.
