Czech mate?: Can Skoda's first large family car compete against the latest models from well-established names like Saab and Toyota?

Article Abstract:

There has been a growth in sales of large family cars and four models have been assessed and compared with the current Best Buy, the VW Passat. The Mazda 626 was found to be very reliable, as was the Toyota Carina E which was replaced by the Avensis, although the Saab 900 had patch reliability. The Skoda Octavia is a new model and it is too early to know how reliable it will be. The Toyota Avensis was the Best Buy, proving to be reliable, refined, comfortable and easy to drive.

The Scenic route: The Renault Megane Scenic is the first of its kind - a cross between an MPV and a small family estate

Article Abstract:

The Renault Megane Scenic is a combination of a multipurpose vehicle (MPV) and a small estate car. A test drive of the 1.6e RT Scenic gave similar fuel economy to the 1.4 litre Megane hatchback. The ride was comfortable and road handling was good. Internally it features plenty of headroom in the front, although the driving position was not comfortable. Driver's airbag is standard and the remote central locking also operates an immobiliser.
