Deli belly: The standard of food hygiene at some delicatessens is alarmingly low. We found food-poisoning bacteria in some foods and saw risky food-handling and storage practices

Article Abstract:

Inspections have revealed that some delicatessens are now always following the recommendations for food safety made following recent E. coli outbreaks. Samples of brie, ham and ready-made dishes from 61 deli counters around London were tested at a laboratory and a further 64 deli counters were visited by an environmental health officer (EHO) to assess standards of hygiene. Three of the samples tested contained Listeria monocytogenes, a food-poisoning bacteria, and a further five had unsatisfactory levels of E.coli. None of the shops visited by the EHO fulfilled all the criteria for good hygiene practices, with food storage temperatures being the biggest problem, although supermarket delis scored much higher marks than independent delis.

Make a clean sweep

Article Abstract:

The cylinder cleaners which performed best in tests were the Miele S312i, at 160 pounds sterling, the Panasonic MC-E962, at 150 pounds and Hoover Alpina SC11, at 110 pounds. The cleaners were easy to use and picked up dust effectively. The Miele machine was the most reliable cylinder cleaner. The best performing upright was the Dyson DC01, at 200 pounds. The best cleaner for people with allergies was the Hoover Purepower U3 120 which costs 120 pounds. Cylinder cleaners performed better than upright cleaners overall.
