Down your street

Article Abstract:

An authority is responsible for almost everything in a street, and residents have the right to complain when problems arise. Typical problems include loud neighbours, waste collection, roadworks, parking, door-to-door selling, street lighting, dogs, pubs and drains. Complaints can be addressed to local, county, district, regional, or island councils, together with the London and metropolitan borough councils, and the Dept of the Environment for Northern Ireland. Details of which council to contact for individual problems is included, together with the structure of local govts and plan of action for making a complaint.

Health on the high street

Article Abstract:

An investigation of the chain of private GP clinics run by Medicentre, the largest such chain in the UK, reveals that the way in which different clinics deal with patients is not consistent. Furthermore, Medicentre does not always ensure that patients' own GPs receive information about serious health difficulties. In two cases, Medicentre doctors prescribed totally inappropriate drugs. A number of the researchers had to wait up to half an hour to be seen, and there was no evidence of any complaints procedure.

Street wars

Article Abstract:

In 1992, 5, 000 people were injured in and around street works, and 70 people died. The life expectancy of urban trees is being cut significantly by street works, and legislation which aims to reduce congestion and improve safety is not being effectively enforced. Cable TV companies plan to dig up 60,000 miles of pavement over the next three years. Advice on who to contact if street work is unduly noisy, disrupting or damaging is given.
