Hiring a car or van

Article Abstract:

Cars were hired and deals evaluated from members of the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association: Avis, British Car Rental, Budget, Eurodollar, Europcar and Hertz, and from small independent firms. Vans were hired from Budget, Eurodollar, Kenning and Smith Self Drive. Three in five cars and vans hired had serious problems. Estimates may or may not include VAT and different levels of insurance. Prices vary considerably, but haggling is worthwhile. The best deal came from Budget.

Hire education

Article Abstract:

An anonymous investigation of vehicle hire firms assesses the quality of their service and rates the roadworthiness of the vehicles. Some 11 rental chains and 30 independent firms were surveyed to see where the best deal was being offered. In most cases, staff were helpful but could have given more information. Of the 58 vehicles hired, two were unsafe and nearly half were in an unsatisfactory state. Details of the survey are presented.
