Play your cards right

Article Abstract:

A number of UK supermarket chains are now offering loyalty cards, which record how much a customer spends and offer a discount on goods and services when a specific total has been accumulated. Increasing competition is prompting supermarkets to widen the range of rewards to include family leisure activities. Loyalty cards have the potential to boost supermarket sales, and also allow valuable information about customers' purchasing habits to be obtained.

Play your cards right

Article Abstract:

Loyalty cards are currently held by over 50% of adults. Supermarkets currently reward points worth 1 pence on every pound, which can be exchanged for discount options, tickets, and air miles. Rewards offered by some high street chains are slightly better with Boots offering 1 pence per 25 pence spent, and C&A offering five pounds per one hundred pounds spent. Multi-retailer schemes offer the best opportunities for accumulating points.

Using plastic cards abroad

Article Abstract:

Plastic transaction cards and traveler's checks can be used by holidaymakers for convenience and economy. Points to bear in mind when using plastic cards abroad include exchange rates, which may not be those quoted at the time of purchase. Despite drawbacks, plastic cards are recommemded for the flexibility they offer, with a back-up such as cash or travellers' cheques.
