Pub wine challenge: the range is wider, the measures are bigger but the quality's still lacking, according to our nationwide tests
Article Abstract:
Inspectors visited 70 pubs to test the quality and availability of wines on offer. Most pubs offered a choice of red wine and dry or medium white wine, although a few pubs did not offer wine at all. A quarter of pubs offer over four different white wines, but the choice of red wine was more limited. The average measures were larger than a previous survey 10 years ago and half of the wines were rated as either good or excellent. A separate expert tasting panel however was more critical of the general wine standard.

Spanish red wine
Article Abstract:
Almost 10% of wine drunk in the United Kingdom comes from Spain and the Rioja region in Spain produces most of this red wine. A taste test of Spanish red wines concluded that Cosme Palacio y Hermanos 1995, Rioja, was the best of the wines sampled. It costs 5.99 pounds sterling. Marques de Murrieta Rioja Reserva Tinto 1991, costing 7.99 pounds, was judged to be the next best wine. None of the wines costing under 5 pounds was given a top rating but Valdemar Rioja 1996, at 4.69 pounds, was reasonably good.

Red, red wine
Article Abstract:
Most red wines from the south of France which are readily available in the UK are blends of grape varieties which are traditional to the area. They tend to vary greatly in quality, and most are not particularly attractive. The best in a tasting of 27 of these wines was 1993 St Michael Domaine St-Germain, Minervois AC, from Marks and Spencer, followed by Somerfield's Cabernet Sauvignon, vin de pays d'Oc, Les Vignerons de Val d'Orbieu.
