Rail fares revisited

Article Abstract:

Railway companies are still breaking the rules which say they must offer passengers complete information when asked, according to a survey, and tell passengers if a rival company offers cheaper tickets. Some 116 tickets were purchased for 15 separate journeys between London-Bristol, London-Birmingham and London-Exeter on three competitive rail routes. On each route information giving the cheapest option for the journey was very difficult to obtain and in some cases was not even offered.

How to get redress

Article Abstract:

When claiming compensation, small claims courts or arbitration may be used. If the company is a member of a trade association it is more likely to have an arbitration scheme. This is usually decided on written evidence; small claims courts require personal presentation. Small claims are usually under 1,000 pounds sterling, but the court may agree to hear higher claims. Compensation varies widely. The award cannot be higher than the claim.
