Rating reliability

Article Abstract:

Most people want their cars to be reliable but it is not easy to ascertain the reliability of particular models. Surveys show that the number of car breakdowns is falling, although faulty cars continue to be a big problem, with 40% of the newest cars having faults in 1996. Rust problems continue to decline, although corrosion can occur as the car ages. Some of the largest car makers, such as Ford, Fiat and Vauxhall, have improved the reliability of many of their models, although European manufacturers tend to fall behind Japanese makers.

Small family cars

Article Abstract:

A survey of a range of small family cars is presented alphabetically and in table form. A recommended buy is the Volkswagen Golf, priced from 10,720 pounds sterling for a new model, with good secondary safety and comfortable seats. The car is reliable and economical, but road noise can be a problem. Other small family cars are evaluated.
