Seoul survivors

Article Abstract:

The South Korean government invested $34 billion in recapitalizing the country's banks, protecting their depositors and disposing of their bad loans in 1998. The number of people employed in the banking sector has been reduced by a third, with further redundancies being inevitable as banks merge or close down. The banks have traditionally been very closely monitored by the government, but the government now wants them to become more independent. However, bank managers do not have the skills they need to develop activities other than lending.

Fragmenting magma

Article Abstract:

Papale has proposed a strain-induced brittle fracture mechanism for magma fragmentation. He has calculated conduit flow parameters for different magma. Average mixture weight, conduit resistance and eruption discharge rate will depend strongly on the position of the fragmentation level. Papale's model returns to the mid-nineteenth century ideas of James Clerk Maxwell on pseudo-fluids.
