Article Abstract:

French pharmaceutical laboratories are increasingly developing fragile medications and are more frequently using type I glass because it is more neutral than plastic. However, glass is not 100%, but glass manufacturers are striving to reduce interactions between glass and medication. Saint-Gobain developed a new version of type I glass in 1998, which limits the amount of aluminium released. The German group Schott has strengthened the internal walls of its bottles by lining them with a layer of silicone oxide.

French glass manufacturer, Saint-Gobain Desjonqueres has invested EUR 6.4mn into a new workshop in the cold section of its plant in Mers-les-Bains, in the Somme departement . The plant is dedicated to glass packaging for perfumes and cosmetics.

FRANCE: GLASS RECYCLING IN 1998

Article Abstract:

According to the Verre Avenir association, there were 1,600,000 tonnes of glass recycled in France in 1998, nearly 60% of the glass packaging, up 10% from 1997. It may achieve its objective of recycling 75% of glass packaging in 2002.
