FRANCE: INTERACTIONS BETWEEN PACKAGING AND FOOD

Article Abstract:

Packaging manufacturers and food companies are increasingly placing a priority on packaging materials which have a neutral odour and which are innocuous. Suppliers are carrying out studies to determine how innocuous packaging materials are, because they are aware that containers are not 100% neutral and therefore they present a risk in terms of food safety. According to Thierry Souccar, the author of a study of food packaging, packaging materiels do not represent a major health risk in France. The tests carried out show that overall packaging is innocuous, particularly for plastic materials, 90% innocuous; paper, 80% innocuous; and rubber, 70% innocuous. Packaging companies are placing a priority on ensuring good taste and odour quality, and on detecting substances which can migrate from the container.

FRANCE: PLASTICS' SUITABILITY FOR USE WITH FOOD

Article Abstract:

The suitability of packaging made of plastic for use in contact with food now appears to be well-established. Elf-Atochem has a rigorous method to ensure that plastics are guaranteed to be safe for contact with food. This method reduces or eliminates certain substances which are part of the containers' formulation, such as the reduction of the level of residual monomers, the use of authorised and non-toxic agents and colouring agents, the improvement of alloys in order to limit the migration of structural interfaces.
