From transcurrent faulting to frontal subduction: a seismotectonic study of the northern Caribbean plate boundary from Cuba to Puerto Rico

Article Abstract:

Seismotectonic study of the northern Caribbean plate boundary from Cuba to Puerto Rico reveals the deep geometry of the region and detects the tectonic and kinematic regime along it. In northeastern Caribbea, the seismicity is restricted along an east-west trending lineament, corresponding to the trace of the major strike-slip fault system. Focal mechanisms and earthquake distribution indicate the presence of a lithospheric slab, acquired from the frontal subduction under the Lesser Antilles. The slab dips down under eastern Hispaniola and Puerto Rico, and a transcurrent Caribbean plate boundary separates it from the Atlantic Oceanic lithosphere.

Constraints on present-day Basin and Range deformation from space geodesy

Article Abstract:

Combined satellite laser ranging and very long baseline interferometry data suggests that Ely, Nevada, is moving west while Owens Valley Radio Observatory in eastern California is moving northwest. The east-west extension in the eastern Basin and Range is considerably faster than earlier estimates. Geodetic data from very long baseline interferometry and satellite laser ranging combined with other data have been applied to study deformation in the Basin and Range province of western United states.

Neotectonics of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, northeastern Caribbean, from GPS geodesy

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the use of GPS-derived velocity measurements to determine the nature of the boundary between Caribbean and North American plates and the existence of microplates in the boundary zone.
