Seismicity and tectonics in Juyjuy Province, northwestern Argentina

Article Abstract:

Crustal earthquakes in the Juyjuy province of Argentina are studied using seismic data from the Portable Array for Numerical Digital Analysis network. The Sierra de Zapla area registered the highest seismic concentration. Peak seismicity levels are obtained from depths of 20-25 km, where the earthquakes have a shallow nodal plane that dips westward. Wide-angle Moho relfections indicate a thickness of 42 km for the foreland. Analysis suggests that Neogene compression of weak planes result in high seismicity. The existence of a midcrustal detachment is inferred.

Basement seismicity beneath the Andean Precordillera thin-skinned thrust belt and implications for crustal and lithospheric behavior

Article Abstract:

A seismic network in Argentina shows a segmented pattern ofcrustal scale basement faults beneath the eastern part of the Precordillera tectonic province of the Andean foreland. Moreover, the geometry of these faults does not correlate with the surface geology, and the basement faults areresponsible for the 1944 San Juan earthquake. Therefore, there are complex structural relationships between surface geologic features in San Juan and the Precordillera basement faulting.

Paleomagnetically defined rotations from the Precordillera of northern Chile: evidence of localized in situ fault-controlled rotations

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the use of paleomagnetics in the investigation of the Sierra Castillo-Agua Amarga Fault's pattern of deformation. The variation which was found in the rotation pattern is discussed.
