Temperature and copepod growth in the sea: a comment on the temperature-dependent model of Huntley and Lopez

Article Abstract:

A 1992 paper by M.E. Huntley and M.D.G. Lopez posits that the regression of growth of marine copepods as a result of temperature is noisy and not highly predictive. Huntley and Lopez attribute this phenomenon to extrinsic and intrinsic variability among copepods. Using an alternative method of estimating copepod growth rate, they conclude that temperature is the primary factor behind copepod growth, even overriding food availability. However, this conclusion may be erroneous in that Huntley and Lopez failed to consider the complexity of copepods' response to environmental variability.

Temperature and copepod production in the sea: a reply

Article Abstract:

A 1992 paper on the effects of temperature on the growth of marine copepods has been criticized for not taking into account the impact of environmental variability on copepod development. Critics suggest that only by fitting the physiological rate data through the maximum growth rates can a greater insight into the relationship between temperature and copepod growth be gained. However, closer study reveals that there are no bases for these criticisms.

Nutrition and the regulation of egg production in the calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa

Article Abstract:

Egg production in the calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa is affected by concentrations of three fatty acids out of 18 present in the diet and of four amino acids out of 16 present. The effort needed to capture a ration also affected egg production, as did variations in the kinds of organisms taken when feeding from a mixture.
