Are employment and managerial control equivalent? Evidence from an electronics producer

Article Abstract:

Trends in US employment, such as temporary workers, employee empowerment, and self-management have gained popularity due to the occurrence of dual internal labor markets, better wage flexibility, and increased costs in maintaining regular work staffs. Transaction cost economics presupposes that managerial control is the same as employment due to the characterization of contractual relationships between employers and employees. The assumption arises from a lack of an established definition of managerial control and disregard for transaction costs.

Monopoly power vs. productivity effects on union membership

Article Abstract:

Wages of displaced workers before and after unemployment were analyzed to test two hypothesis regarding the effect of union membership on the reemployment earnings of these workers. The monopoly power hypothesis states that unions use monopoly power in setting wages, while the productivity enhancement hypothesis states that unions encourage productivity-enhancing investments that last beyond current employment. Results provide support for the monopoly power hypothesis.

The role of managerial discretion in union mergers

Article Abstract:

An analysis of union merger activity is presented. The analysis describes such activity based on financial data obtained from the Labor-Management Services Administration and considers the case of managerial discretion. It is shown that the absence of union and leadership rivalries generate no basis for officer control. In addition, such a situation generates much allowance for managerial discretion.
