Barriers to the implementation of economic development projects in rural Texas communities

Article Abstract:

Rural areas experience many difficulties in implementing economic development projects. Many of their problems stem from a small population size, which often means limited human and financial resources, and their lack of diversification. Texas is among the many states that provide programs to help rural communities overcome such disadvantages. One of these initiatives is the Texas Commerce Dept.'s Economic Development Base Analysis Program. Participants in this program were surveyed to determine the impediments to economic development projects. The results are discussed.

Estimating potential labor supply in a mid-sized Iowa community

Article Abstract:

A new method for the estimation of a community's labor supply has been developed by the University of Iowa's Institute for Decision Making. The analysis is based on the geographic boundaries of the community's laborshed or the region from where it draws its commuting workers. The method has been applied to estimate the labor force in three mid-sized Iowa communities. The results showed that the method is accurate in the estimation of size, availability and characteristics of a region's workforce.
