Building for the future

Article Abstract:

Many Southeast Asian developing nations are presenting good investment opportunities for larger companies. Some companies have joined national authorities and governmental bodies in initiating construction programs and facilities for future container traffic. Although intra-Asian trade ranks third in the world, it is the fastest growing sea link for container traffic with a 14% increase in 1997.

Shifting sands

Article Abstract:

The Far Eastern Freight Conference (FEFC), the organization that tries to maintain sensible, standardized shipping prices between Europe and Asia, is undergoing a restructuring. Seventeen shipping lines currently belong to the FEFC. In response to pressure from non-FEFC members, the conference is streamlining itself to boost efficiencies.

Room for growth

Article Abstract:

It is estimated that some 25 mil tons of goods passed through Hong Kong and Singapore's ports in 1996. Observers believe business in these container ports will increase by 5% in 1997. However, ports in these countries are getting much competition from other ports such as Port Kelang, Yantian, and Kaohsiung.
