Environmental protection: the Omani legal regime

Article Abstract:

Oman's fundamental environmental statute is the Law on Conservation of the Environment and Prevention of Pollution. This law, set up by Sultani Decree 10/82 and amended by Sultani Decrees 63/85, 82/88 and 71/89, established somewhat rigorous standards for the licensing of activities that may cause pollution. In addition, the Petroleum and Minerals Law, set up by Sultani Decree 42/74, imposed environmental regulations on the petroleum industry. The Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Environment enforces these and other environmental laws and regulations.
