Establishing a presence in the Islamic republic

Article Abstract:

The Iranian Constitution of 1979, Principle 81, prohibited establishing foreign companies in Iran. Relaxation and re-interpretation has been occurring to permit the use of commercial agents, foreign investment, joint ventures and branch offices. Under the Iranian Companies Registration Act and the Attraction and Protection of Foreign Investments Act, foreign firms must register with the Companies Registration Office and are regulated in matters of capital, residence, employment of natives, liability and contractual requirements.

Article Abstract:

The Saudi Arabian govt plans on using the private sector to drive its industrialization program and joint ventures with foreign partners to achieve technology transfer. The Sixth Industrial Plan (1995-2000) calls for $11.7 billion in private financing and $4.1 billion from public companies. Chief among the latter for foreign investors is the Saudi Industrial Development Fund, or SIDF. Other aspects of joint venturing, including Saudi culture and the outlook for particular industries, are discussed.

Saudi update: offsets and other developments

Article Abstract:

Two new projects under the Saudi-British Al-Yamamah economic offset program have received approval which brings the total number to 12. Glaxo will be establishing a pharmaceutical factory with Saudi Imports Co. and Vanderlande Industries, along with British Aerospace, will be joining Saudi firms Natel and Almabani to produce handling systems. One the first offset companies, Advanced Electronics Co., announced that it received contracts to manufacture equipment for military vehicles.
