Implications of overstating inflation for indexing government programs and understanding economic progress

Article Abstract:

An overestimate of the changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) has several implications to the federal budget and programs, and the understanding and measurement of economic development. Federal programs will overpay as a result of an upward bias in the CPI. This upward bias will also lessen federal revenues as the individual income tax is overindexed. Future budget deficits and the national debt will also be greatly reduced by the improvements in the CPI.

Information technology and grwoth

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to provide new proofs on the substitution of information technology for other kinds of capital and labor inputs in the US economy. The substitution toward computers in the business and household sectors was examined as the price of computers significantly declined in the 1980s and 1990s. Results indicated that profit-maximizing companies and utility-maximizing consumers substituted information technology for other goods and services, replacing other types of equipment and economized on the use of labor effort.
