Iran and the WTO

Article Abstract:

The Iranian government is of two minds regarding the country's accession to GATT and the World Trade Organization (WTO). Economic arguments militate in favor of joining the WTO, while arguments against joining see GATT as a tool of powerful industrialized states and cite possible disadvantages of following its rules. Membership in the WTO would reinforce the country's current trend toward economic liberalization and lead neighbors to think of Iran as a lucrative country to do business with. These economic advantages could extend to the political level, promoting stability in the region. The advantages of joining the WTO very much outweigh the disadvantages.

Doing business with Iran: guide for U.S. companies

Article Abstract:

US companies are not totally restricted from doing business with Iran, but are limited to what they can export by the Commerce Department. Technologically sophisticated materials contained on the Commerce Control List, any designated national security technology, nuclear and missile technology and other unilaterally controlled items may not be be exported. Imports of goods or services from Iran are prohibited except where they are in settlement of Iran-US Claims Tribunal cases. Travel to Iran is not recommended.

How U.S. laws affect American companies in the Middle East

Article Abstract:

United States companies doing business in the Middle East must be careful to adhere to US laws pertaining to overseas business, as well as local laws. The Departments of State, Treasury and Commerce each have their own export controls, and there is a complex set of US anti-boycott laws directed primarily against the Arab Boycott of Israel. American companies are required to develop their own procedures for complying with these laws.
