A degree of forethought

Article Abstract:

American universities have offered degree courses in journalism since the beginning of the 20th century but these have only recently become available in the UK. Courses have been offered in media studies, cultural studies and communications, most other journalistic education being conducted in technical colleges. James Curran of Goldsmiths' College, recently returned from teaching in the US, says that the UK is now moving from an indentureship training in journalism to provision by higher education.

Controlling interests

Article Abstract:

The changes to the treatment of local authority involvement in companies aims to encourage authorities to be more involved in joint ventures. Financial incentives have been offered under the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) to encourage authorities to transfer assets to companies. There are concerns that the legislation ignores the long term relationships that many authorities have of working with the private sector.

Looking to the future

Article Abstract:

The World Trade Centre Metro Manila, the Philippines, has hosted worldwide expositions since opening in 1996. The center averaged three major events a month in 1997, and can accommodate over 500 booths measuring 3 meters square. The Trade Centre's success demonstrates the changed economic status of the Philippines, once called "Asia's basketcase."
