Malaysia

Article Abstract:

Malaysia, being an importer and exporter of labor, exposes the complexity of international immigration. The temporary use of foreign labor in labor-intensive industries helps to reduce labor shortages and costs, and to sustain industrial competitiveness in the short-run. However, in the long run, its bearing can affect economic restructuring from low to high tech industries, resulting in stagnation and thereby threatening national stability. Malaysia requires a long-term immigration policy related to economic restructuring and upgrading of automation and mechanization. Luring back emigrant labors can also help.

Overview

Article Abstract:

The Asian countries are facing a huge challenge with the migration of a large number of workers to the seven labor importing countries. The Asian immigration nations need to bridge the gap between policies prohibiting the importation of unskilled foreign workers. Simultaneously, the emigration countries also need to address the problem of exploitation of migrants by recruitment agencies. The need for skilled and unskilled workers, the trend of hiring foreign workers as trainees, and overstaying of temporary workers abroad are likely to affect the Asian migration pattern.

Asian labour migration: past, present, and future

Article Abstract:

The level of migration in Asia is increasing due to a decrease in domestic workers, the categorization of the labor market and the increasing wage gap between sending and receiving countries. The volume of migration in the receiving countries is affected by their immigration policies. Despite low labor costs, the imported labor is raising concerns regarding the social costs. Asian countries have diverted the labor-intensive industries to other countries through foreign investments, to block foreign workers and make economic adjustments to labor shortage.
