Market timing ability and volatility implied in investment newsletters' asset allocation recommendations

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine the market timing ability and volatility suggested in the asset allocation recommendations included in investment newsletters. The investigation looked at a sample of 237 investment newsletter strategies from 1980 to 1992. Results found no proof that letters systematically raise equity weights before market increases or cut weights before market declines. Findings indicated that there is a correlation between disagreement among newsletters and future realized and implied volatility.
