Open regionalism versus discriminatory trading agreements

Article Abstract:

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) advocates open regionalism or the cultivation of non-discriminatory trade agreements with its members and other countries. This market-led framework supports free trade with industrialized and developing countries. It upholds the most favored nation principle of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and is expected to be implemented in other regions moving toward integration. However, issues concerning free riding and its implementation in small regions remain unresolved.

Can open regionalism work in the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Co-operation

Article Abstract:

The prospects of the Indian Ocean Rim Assn for Regional Co-operation (IOR-ARC) in promoting regional economic cooperation are analyzed. It is shown that the IOR-ARC fails to meet most of the criteria for economic integration. The political will and commitment of these countries essential to economic integration are also weak as evidenced by the failed attempts at cooperation in the past.
