Experimental consumer price index for Americans 62 years of age and older

Article Abstract:

The Older Americans Act of 1987 mandated that the Bureau of Labor Statistics develop an experimental index for Americans 62 years old or older. (CPI-E) This experimental index studies the same categories as the CPI-U and CPI-W. During a 5-year period from December 1990 to 1995, the CPI-E went up 15.9%, as compared to 14.7% in the CPI-U and 14.1% in the CPI-W. The medical care component showed the largest increase in the CPI-E, while this population allocated a smaller part of their expenses for personal and educational needs.
