Productivity and imperfect competition: econometric estimation from panel-data of Italian firms

Article Abstract:

Labor productivity in Italian firms from 1973-81 is studied using a model with imperfect competition. Imperfect competition occurs with monopolies or oligopolies where the theory of price markup is applied. Results of the study show that imperfect competition and significant changes in market structure patterns were evident. This illustrates the decline of the labor cost flexibility in Italian manufacturing during that period.
