SPAIN: 25% GROWTH IN COURIER SECTOR

Article Abstract:

In 1998 private courier companies in Spain registered a turnover of Pta 175,000mn (euro 1,051mn), representing a year-on-year growth of 25%. According to DBK the yearly growth between 1998 and 1999 for the general goods transport sector could be between 9% and 11%, meaning turnover could increase to Pta 425,000mn (euro 2,55mn). Most of the growth is expected to be in small parcel and document courier services and international transport. In terms of turnover, the ranking for courier companies in Spain in 1998 was as follows: Seur, Pta 51,000mn MRW, Pta 33,300 DHL, Pta 16,500 TNT, Pta 13,000 Chronopost, Pta 7,500 (in 1997)

SPAIN: EXPANSION STRATEGY OF TELEPIZZA

Article Abstract:

Spanish fast food chain Telepizza aims to focus its future expansion strategy in Spain in the development of the restaurant concept instead of its traditionally main business of take away. According to its president Mr. Ballve, such strategy will mainly target small towns with nearly 1,000 houses, aiming to open 120 franchised outlets. Outlook for international business development is to enter during three years in three new markets per year. At present Telepizza is already operative in Portugal, Poland, Chile and Mexico.

SPAIN: CANDIDATES TO BUY CARREFOUR UNITS

Article Abstract:

Some competitors of French retail group Carrefour could are interested in the purchase of 42 establishments to be sold in Spain by the group in order to adapt to antitrust rules. Supermarkets are eyed by Superdiplo, Enaco, Ahold and Caprabo, while Alcampo could aim to buy hypermarkets. US giant Wal-Mart could make a bid for all the units put for sale.
