Article Abstract:

Oracle and the newcomer Informix dominate the database industry. Demand for new data-access types has put more pressure on the existing models and on the industry. The availability of certain applications such as on-line publishing, Net-based retailing, and video-conferencing has meant users demanding certain options such as accessing, storing, manipulating, and filing multimedia data. The challenge that the industry faces is that relational databases cannot understand and manage the new data types. A transition to the object model is occurring.
