Suppliers' associations in the Japanese automobile industry: collective action for technology diffusion

Article Abstract:

Suppliers' associations continue to have an important economic function within the Japanese automobile sector, according to a survey of almost 500 parts suppliers. While the bilateral relationships between parts suppliers and car assemblers are important, the lateral relationships between suppliers also contribute to the competitiveness of the Japanese car sector. The survey provides evidence of lateral communication and network-based learning amongst suppliers. Since the leading suppliers each serve more than one assembler, this helps diffuse innovation throughout the sector.
