Technology and the small economic development office

Article Abstract:

The North Shore Economic Development Commission and the Sea to Sky Economic Development Commission are two small economic development offices in British Columbia, Canada. The former is in an urban area while the latter is in a rural community. Due to limited budgets and few staff members, both economic development offices rely on a combination of old and new technologies to promote their projects. Some examples are the of radio to disseminate information about projects and accomplishments, using computer screen savers to advertise projects and using CD-ROMS as storage medium for photographs of people and places that are of interest to investors.

Analyzing a retail trade area

Article Abstract:

The North Shore Economic Development Commission, West Vancouver, does not allow any industry in one of the three municipalities it covers. As such, the community's workplan focus is to redefine retail trade areas, delineate opportunity, and promote entrepreneurs' access to important primary information. It is shown that this information is desired not only by developers and business people but by local community associations as well.

Using technology in the office of the High Point Economic Development Corporation

Article Abstract:

The High Point Economic Development Corp. in High Point, NC, was established in 1990 with four staff memmers, one 386 computer and an old mainframe computer. More computer equipment were purchased eventually and integrated with other equipment in a small network and electronic publishing system. The computer system has helped enhance the office's data analysis, client presentation, client tracking and general organization.
