The Russian miners' strike of 1996

Article Abstract:

The Russian coal miners' strike which took place in Feb. 1996 failed despite overwhelming support from other workers due to the political weakness of the miners' trade unions. These unions failed to instill discipline into their members, preventing them from sustaining the strike and achieving political gains. Moreover, majority of the miners were unwilling supporters of the strike since they do not depend on government subsidies.
