A new fabric of reality?

Article Abstract:

Galileo's idea of a law of nature marked the beinning of modern science. There has been a tension since Galileo between the idea that science should help us to understand the world, and the idea that it can help us to predice and control it. Modern science places a great deal of emphasis on experiments, and less on theory, yet explanations are crucial to scientific progress. The purpose of a theory is not to survive a test, just as the function of aircraft is not to pass safety tests.

Science in a farewell to arms

Article Abstract:

It is argued that by assisting with the elimination of nuclear weapons, scientists may be able to reaffirm their integrity, which was damaged by the military-industrial complex which has developed over the last 50 years. The dropping of the atomic bomb in Japan dawned a new era of material wealth for scientists, however, the event was also the start of hostile anti-science attitudes from the public.
