The future rides on real commitment to science

Article Abstract:

University research scientists should have more pay and their value to society better appreciated. The problem of finding young people interested in training as scientists is compounded by the lack of understanding of the value of science by the general public. Whilst the number of vacancies for academics is likely to rise in the near future the number of well-qualified young scientists in the university sector is declining. Many young scientists are foregoing the chance to undertake scientific research in universities to find employment in the more lucrative private sector.

Bricks and mortar of the 21st century

Article Abstract:

Materials science links engineering and science, it involves developing a wide range of new materials, such as materials for artificial hips, for fuel cells and for electronic chips to treat blindness. Yet the number of students taking courses in materials science have been falling. There are fewer physics teachers to teach at A-level therefore too few pupils have sufficient knowledge of physics combined with maths and chemistry to study materials science. Salaries offered to materials scientists, in the UK, are very low and as a result many graduates work overseas.

The one that got away from the fish laboratory...

Article Abstract:

Would-be academics face a number of obstacles in the United Kingdom. They have to build up a publications list after they have finished their doctoral studies. The qualifications needed to secure a permanent post have increased, and existing academics have to spend more time applying for research funds and becoming involved in departmental politics. The pay of academics is also poor, and this, combined with stress and bureaucracy, means that would-be academics seek employment elsewhere.
