'A possibility is that a degree is used by employers as an easy way to draw a line between the folk they are willing to employ and those they are not'

Article Abstract:

An analysis of research by the Higher Education Funding Council for England which revealed that children from a well-to-do background are six times more likely than children from a poorer background to go to university and the questions that this research raises. It is noted that graduates earn 40% more than non-graduates over their lifetime, which either means that graduates are simply more productive than non-graduates, or that employers are simply using degrees as a way of weeding out a portion of the people that apply for certain jobs.
