A question of money

Article Abstract:

The Government's comprehensive spending review in summer 1998 made it clear that the long-term solution to the financial crisis in higher education does not lie in the public purse. The university community must therefore overcome its widespread reluctance to consider radical funding alternatives and start thinking the unthinkable. Universities must be allowed to develop alternative sources of capital. Options for mixed sources of finance from individuals, employers and the state, a graduate tax on employment, and sponsorship of students and courses all merit consideration.

A reference that should be sought

Article Abstract:

'The English Studies Book' is a textbook which involved a great deal of work to produce. British academics are faced with dilemma when writing a book, since they receive less encouragement for writing textbooks than for writing what is classed as research. Textbooks may undergo far more scrutiny than works classed as research, but the British system forces academics to focus more on research, which attracts more funding than does excellence in teaching.
