Kicking up the dust in a chaotic storehouse

Article Abstract:

The creation and use of 'metadata' is one of a number of approaches being explored to overcome the problems of searching for specific pieces of information on the World Wide Web. Metadata describes attributes of other data, such as a network resource. The subject information gateways being developed as part of the Joint Information Systems Committee's Electronic Libraries (eLib) programme are one example. The 13-element Dublin Core developed in the US provides a simple metadata format but it seems likely that specialised formats will be developed to meet the needs of specific communities.

South Africa's chaotic cultural revolution

Article Abstract:

Government attempts to transform educational opportunities for black students are creating problems for South Africa's universities. The government has reduced the standards required for black students to pass matriculation examinations and to enter university. Universities are having to take in large numbers of poorly-educated black students, some of whom can barely read. The universities also have other problems, including under-financing and student unrest. This situation cannot continue if South Africa is to have the quality of graduates its advanced economy requires.

Alive and kicking

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the state of gender studies and the contention that debate about gender and feminism is becoming passe. It is argued that there are still aspects of social life and parts of the world where the issue of gender is still a vital topic and that there still remains a place for gender studies.
