A ruckus over UCAS

Article Abstract:

The UK Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) is looking at a number of changes to its organisation in order to improve the service it offers to students. The Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals Chairman Martin Harris suggests predicted results should have a higher degree of accuracy, an improvement in the availability of entry requirements and an extension to the closing date. It has been acknowledged the system needs to be reorganised but a better system has yet to be devised. The idea of a post-qualification admission system has been discredited.

Shiny new image does the business

Article Abstract:

New UK universities have successfully created brand images, according to a survey of school students selecting a university. Universities with easier admission procedures tended to have fewer applicants. This could be because they are seen as low quality or because students may believe they have too many applicants. Cost can influence applications, including the cost of accommodations. Facilities and academic reputation are also important when school students take decisions.
