Big vision of bosses' champion

Article Abstract:

Director of education and training, Mary Lord, wrote a report which outlined major changes to the university system. Lord advocates making universities much more open to the general public so that 50% of the workforce is undertaking formal education at any given time. Students would study at their own pace for credits towards a degree. Lord proposes having a University for Industry to manage this scheme. Full-time students will have to have their studies related to the workplace. She wants business people to work in universities and to send academics into the workplace.

Howells defend corporate degrees

Article Abstract:

Some higher education experts suggest the introduction of corporate degrees will lead to a fall in standards at UK universities. Lifelong Learning Minister Dr Kim Howells has called for universities to provide degrees which are more closely linked to vocations. Others pointed out that businesses may set up their own education establishments if universities failed to train graduates to meet their needs. Howells emphasized the importance of universities making links with companies, to help provide the continual learning program he favours.
