Time to defend UK courses in other realms

Article Abstract:

Funding councils in the UK are concerned that they cannot regulate off-shore courses provided by private universities overseas such as in Israel, but proposed legislation in Israel aimed at increasing government control over private college activities is excessive. The United Kingdom provides the majority of off-shore courses run by private colleges in Israel. The draft legislation is disproportionate to the level of intervention required to ensure education quality, such as by deeming colleges which provide foreign-validated courses to be branches of the vailidating university.

Audit's deep confusion

Article Abstract:

The UK Higher Education Quality Council (HEQC) audit of higher education institutions focuses on corporate responsibility for the maintenance of academic standards. However, the HEQC's approach misses elements which are essential to academic standards. Written procedures help to maintain academic standards, but staff development and academic debate are also vital, and some academics maintain that only a subject specialist can determine what a student should study to achieve mastery of their subject.
