A shift in Europe's border conflicts

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom is likely to increase its research into the Islamic question following the growing tensions between North and South in Eastern Europe, especially in the Balkans. The Economic and Social Research Council is funding a research programme to study post-Communist European states, while the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) is funding university posts focusing on former communist European countries. Ten of the 33 HEFCE posts have gone to the Visegrad countries.

A new forum for Europe

Article Abstract:

There is a need for a public forum on European issues within the European Union. Academics within Europe have built up strong links, but the general public tends to see issues in national terms. People's Europe is an attempt to promote an interaction between civil society and institutions within Europe. Political pressure is needed for institutional reform to be carried out. People's Europe can act as a forum for discussions on Europe, and it involves a wide range of groups.

Privatization's harms: economics in Eastern Europe

Article Abstract:

Privatization of state-owned enterprises in Eastern Europe proved more costly than establishing new firms in the private sector. As such, Western aid programs should focus on the creation of legal structures for market development rather than implemetation of risky privatization schemes.
