Article Abstract:

The economic impact of the visual arts sector in the UK is considerable, with one-fifth of the population visiting museums and art galleries, yet business sponsorships for the sector account for less than 20% of the total for all arts and cultural activities. Practising visual artists and exhibition spaces receive a disproportionately low level of public funding, even though more than 1 million people/yr. visit the National Touring Exhibitions organised by the Hayward Gallery. The value to the north of England of Visual Arts UK staged in 1996 has been put at over 75 million pounds sterling.
