A sorry state of affairs

Article Abstract:

While the number of school-leavers in the UK going on to higher education has been rising, up from 240,000 in 1995 to 290,000 in 2004, the figures hide a fall in the number of students applying to courses in either the hard sciences or modern languages. In 1995 there were 7,600 applicants for places on French courses, but this had fallen to 3,400 in 2004, while the number of applicants for places on chemistry courses fell from 28,500 to 15,500 over the same period. The Government needs to take note of this trend and take steps now if it wants to safeguard the future of sciences and languages at universities.
