A warm welcome is just the first step

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the difficulties faced by international students studying at universities in the UK are examined and guidance is given on how best to help overseas students settle in. Suggestions given for how to help foreign students include continuing induction sessions, the appointment of mentors for each student, letting them know what is expected of them, the organisation of events designed to enable them to make friends and mix interculturally and the recognition of achievement in tutorials, assessments and classroom activities.

Tough love works for fledglings

Article Abstract:

The director of learning and teaching development at Anglia Polytechnic University describes the different experiences of gaining her masters, which was a group experience, and her PhD, which was, outside of her relationship with her tutor, a solitary experience. She feels that her understanding of the situation has changed now that she has MA and PhD students of her own, conceding that striking a balance between spoon-feeding and starving graduates while keeping control of her own time is a tricky business.
