Article Abstract:

A reader in evolution at Cambridge University argues that creationists should stick to discussing religion and leave the peppered moth, which has until recently been used as one of the prime examples of natural selection in action, to get on with evolution. It is suggested that when they are arguing their creationist dogma, creationists are in essence arguing about things they know nothing about and if they really did know anything about biology, then they would restrict their arguments to religious education classes and leave biology classes alone.

A truly stellar career that ended with a big bang

Article Abstract:

Fred Hoyle was the leading light in theoretical astronomy in the United Kingdom from just after WWII until his retirement in 1972, almost single-handedly dragging the sector out of the doldrums into which it had sunk. Despite damage done to Hoyle's reputation caused by his involvement in fields outside his expertise following his retirement, the legacy of Hoyle, who died on 20 August 2001, is still felt in British astronomy.

No pain, no progress

Article Abstract:

The designer of one of the experiments on the Huygens probes details the aims of the Huygens probe and analyses the state of space science in the UK ahead of the probe's landing on Titan. It is argued that space science in the UK has never has enough money and that if the Huygens probe fails to deliver any results, then future investment may only be given to "safe" experiments that are relatively certain to produce results.
