A work of art that's brutal to work in

Article Abstract:

Management studies lecturer Jane Collier has reservations about the new building designed for the Judge Institute of Management Studies, Cambridge, England, by renowned architect John Outram. Outram is a classical modernist yet Collier finds the style of his building quite brutal. She comments that functionalism and utilitarianism were not at the forefront of Outram's mind when he designed her office. Collier explains that she goes to the library if she wants to do some work. She also reveals that the tradition of people having coffee and tea together disappeared when they moved to the new building.

First move in a global game plan

Article Abstract:

Chair of digital media and associate dean (postgraduate studies) at the University of the West of England in Bristol, Masoud Yazdani, wants to develop a digital media department to rival the MIT Media Lab. Yazdani is charged with the development of a new research laboratory in the university's faculty of art, media and design, a task which reminds him of his involvement in the birth of a new computer science department at the University of Exeter in 1981. Yazdani stresses that his new department will work in collaboration with other British research groups to compete internationally.
