All human life under one roof

Article Abstract:

The British Museum, which is celebrating its 250th anniversary, faces accusations of complacency, cash problems and questions about the use of its collections, but its director, Neil MacGregor, maintains that it remains one of the world's great museums and is probably the most comprehensive in terms of its collections. MacGregor, who took over as director of the museum in August 2002, faces a number of challenges, even if the museum's finances were stabilised by a programme of over 100 redundancies instituted by his predecessor. The museum states that in order to function effectively, it requires an additional UKPd3 mil on top of its UKPd36 mil/yr government grant.
